A small apprentice padded uncertainly into the den. Her wide blue eyes took in everything, almost eagerly. She opened her mouth in wonder, wondering where Gracestar was. She flicked her small black tail, white paws drawing pictures in the sand. Would Gracestar listen to her?

Moonshine stopped outside the den, having scented Pebblepaw in there. The apprentice wouldn't listen to an apology now, would she?

Pebblepaw squirmed anxiously. She smelled that mean Moonshine. How could she have been made deputy? Pebblepaw turned away, blue eye wide, an waited for Gracestar to appear. She had an important question to ask of her.

What are you two doing in here? Aked Gracestar, rushing past the both of them and sitting in her nest. You KNOW you are not aloud to come in without my permission! Now, can I help you with something?

The small gray tabby looked up at Gracestar. All of a sudden there was a terrible sadness in her icey blue eyes. "Gracestar," she whispered softly, "Why am I dead?"

Moonshine entered the den, not pointing out that she'd been sitting outside. She stared at the apprentice, confused. What in the world was the she-cat talking about?

Honey! Gracestar said in a shocked voice. What would make you think that? You are very alive!

Pebblepaw looked at her white paws. "I am dead." she meowed. "I feel dead. Dead reaches to my heart and into my soul. I think I am dead."

Moonshine meowed, No, you're very alive. Pebblepaw, what's wrong? She was on her feet in a heartbeat.

The grey she-cat cast her daughter a sympathetic look then turned to Moonshine. Moonshine, can we be alone? Pebblepaw and I? You may come back afterwards.

Moonshine nodded and padded out of the den. She felt so....odd. Whatever it was, she didn't like it, and she wanted it to go away. Maybe she could go find some peace out in the territory.
